College Algebra Homework: Improving Your Memory

Believe it or not the trick to mastering algebra is all memorization. Learning the proper formula’s and equations by heart is the secret to successfully passing all of your quizzes and exams. The best way to do this is by doing memory-improving exercise that will help to magnify your ability to remember and apply the correct algebra techniques. Here, we have listed a few suggestions that you can try to help improve your mathematical memory.

  1. Make flash cards
  2. This is one of the age-old studying techniques that students use to memorize complicated concepts. Basically, all you need to do is create for yourself flash cards using index cards or recipe slips of the different algebra equations that you are trying to remember. Then, shuffle and flip through your cards, stating the name of the equation and its applicable purposes. Do this every day for a few weeks and soon the formulas will be embedded in your memory.

  3. Use Repetition
  4. If flash cards are not your cup of tea another thing that you can try is repetitive practice. This is when you write the algebra equations out over and over as well as examples of where they will be used. By doing this several times a week for an extended period you will be able to lodge the formulas into your long term memory.

  5. Make it fun!
  6. If both of these memory strategies sound too boring to you then this last one is probably your best bet. One of the best ways to assure that you always can recall your algebra equations and formulas is by turning them into something fun. Some students use rhymes or funny jokes to help them recall when to use specific equations. Others just sing the formulas or equations out loud in a funny voice so that they will never forget them. It may sound weird- but it is actually amazing how well this study technique works.

No matter which one these 3 memory techniques you use (or a combination of all three) your focus should be on improving your ability to recall the formulas so that you always use the correct one. This is the best way to assure that you do well in your college algebra classes and ace every exam. If you still require additional help, you may find it beneficial to work with a study group or online tutor.
